H1N1 Flu Update, November 20, 2009
We are currently experiencing an up-tick in the number of diagnosed Influenza cases. As of this morning, we have 23 students currently sick with flu and under care. This brings the total of cases since the start of the semester to 210.
The increased number of cases being diagnosed is a concern. As noted at the beginning of the semester, we ask that those students who live within driving distance of the University return home to recover when diagnosed with flu. Home is a wonderful place any time, of course, and the fewer flu cases on campus, the better in all kinds of ways.
We have exhausted our initial batch of H1N1 vaccine. We believe we have taken care of the most at-risk students. We have not been told when we will get more vaccine. I suggest again that if you are able to access the vaccine while you are away for the Thanksgiving pause, you should get vaccinated.
The good news is that while it is not fun being sick, and having to quarantine oneself is socially annoying, the campus flu continues to be fairly mild in its present state.
Our reminders get redundant, but once again I ask you to be careful and be aware. Use the sanitizers that have been distributed around campus. If you think you have the flu, please contact the Health Center right away. And if you are sick, stay away from others until you know the extent of your illness.
Please remember that our teamwork includes students helping other students. If you have a roommate, suitemate or simply a friend who is on the flu list, you might be needed to pick up water and a ‘Feeling Blue’ meal from Sherman. Though Sherman might be a hike for you, I know you can do it for a friend!! And the walk will do you good.
For those of you who will be traveling to be with family, or friends, or simply getting away … have a great time. I am hoping that when we gather after Thanksgiving break we will be fortified and rested - ready to finish the semester with good energy and good health.
