Tutorial Program

English Language Programs offers weekly, individualized tutoring on an as-needed basis to all students who require language support in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

All tutorials for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 will be offered online, providing students with the important opportunity to meet with their ELP writing tutors and develop their critical thinking, analytical writing, and academic oral communication skills from the convenience of their own home. It is even more important to use these services in an online and/or hybrid teaching/learning environment. Apart from making consistent improvements to students' levels of critical analysis and language structure, ELP writing tutors can help students successfully navigate the online learning environment by giving them strategies for writing discussion posts, participating in online discussions, and interacting with their peers and faculty online.

Tutorials are university-funded, student-led tutoring sessions that are tailored to each student's individual needs. Do you have an upcoming essay, a literature review or a chapter of your dissertation? Your tutor can help you develop your ideas, create a thesis, clarify your argument, examine your evidence and offer help with grammar and sentence structure.

Perhaps you have a different type of assignment; with your tutor, you can brainstorm ideas, talk about using secondary sources, or focus on reading strategies or how to conquer heavy reading loads. The tutorial session is there for you to get the help you need.

Our graduate-student tutors are experienced teachers who are familiar with the cross-cultural issues that make writing and speaking in academic English a challenge. Your tutor might also serve as a cultural guide, offering resources to help you navigate the unfamiliar academic landscape.

Your tutor can also help you locate research sources and decipher the particularities of citation and documentation. If you are a teaching fellow, they will offer you practice sessions in giving effective presentations.
