| Saving a Brandeisian Hawk: An Unexpected Rescue | It’s likely that many of you have seen a hawk soaring overhead - their wings spread as they glide through the sky. It’s less likely to see the majestic raptor up close and perched atop your car and taking up residence behind Goldfarb Library. Last month, many staff from ITS and the Library had this very experience as they gently tried to nudge the bird off their vehicles and to take to the skies. The seemingly uninjured hawk’s presence lingered from one day to the next and its unusual behavior prompted staffers to seek help.
Carroll Hardin, Sr. Desktop Systems Specialist in ITS, and avid animal lover shares her story of the unexpected rescue and how the AnimalHelpNow mobile app put wildlife assistance, literally, in the palm of her hands. Read the full story, view photos of the hawk’s journey from library stacks to a treatment facility, and learn more about how you can help a feathered or furry campus visitor. |

| October Holidays | This time of year is full of holidays in the Hindu religion.
Navaratri, or the nine sacred nights dedicated to the Mother Goddess, are celebrated this year October 7 - 15. The celebrations of Navaratri are held at night because it represents our overcoming the ignorance of the mode of darkness.
Dhusshera is celebrated on the tenth day of Navaratri. This signifies the victory of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana, which also represents the false ego. On this day there is often a huge bonfire in which people burn the effigy of Ravana. Thus, it is a festival which shows the process by which humanity can reach the perception of God.
More information on these and other holidays can be found on the Spiritual Life webpage Guide to Religious Observances.
October 19 - Milad al-Nabi in the Muslim religion
The Prophet Muhammad was born in the year 570 CE in Mecca, an oasis town in the Arabian peninsula believed to have been founded by Hagar while she awaited the return of her husband, the Prophet Abraham. While the exact date of the Prophet Muhammad's birth is debated, many single out one of the possible dates to celebrate all the blessings that his prophecy brings to the world. On the 12th day of the Islamic lunar month of Rabi' al-Awwal, many Muslims the world over gather to recite poems recounting the biography and especially the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. |
