Benefits Eligibility
Full-time Staff
Criteria
Regular full-time staff may participate in the benefits program unless otherwise stated. Full-time staff are defined as:
- Nonunion staff members scheduled to work 35 hours per week for 52 weeks a year.
- Union staff members who work in the library and are scheduled to work 35 hours per week for 52 weeks a year.
- All other union employees who are scheduled to work 40 hours per week for 52 weeks a year.
Benefit Programs:
Full-time staff are eligible to participate in all benefits which includes: medical, dental and vision plans; health savings account (HSA), flexible-spending accounts (FSA); basic life, supplemental life and long-term disability insurance plans; 403(b) retirement savings plans, tuition remission for employee and dependents, along with paid time off (PTO) accruals.
Part-time Staff
Criteria
Regular part-time staff who work the following schedules may participate in the benefits program unless otherwise stated:
- Nonunion staff scheduled to work 17.5 hours or more per week for at least 39 weeks a year.
- Union staff members who work in the library and are scheduled to work 17.5 hours or more per week for at least 39 weeks a year.
- All other union employees scheduled to work 20 hours or more per week for at least 39 weeks a year.
Benefit Programs:
Part-time eligible staff are eligible to participate in the following:medical, dental and vision plans; health savings account (HSA), flexible-spending accounts (FSA); basic life, supplemental life insurance, and the 403(b) retirement savings plans. Tuition remission for employees and paid time off (PTO) accruals are prorated based on full-time equivalency (FTE)
Not eligible for Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance or dependent tuition remission.
Faculty
Criteria
Faculty members who have appointments of at least half-time status for one semester or more may participate in the benefits program unless otherwise stated.
- Departments and Faculty Administration determine status based on courses and course load per semester.
Benefit Programs:
Full-time faculty are eligible to participate in medical, dental and vision plans; health savings account (HSA), flexible-spending accounts (FSA); basic life, supplemental life and long-term disability insurance plans; 403(b) retirement savings plans, tuition remission for employees and dependents.
Part-time eligible faculty may participate in medical, dental and vision plans; health savings account (HSA), flexible-spending accounts (FSA); basic life, supplemental life 403(b) retirement savings plans, prorated tuition remission for faculty member only.
- Not eligible for Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance or dependent tuition remission.
Postdoctoral Scholars
- Postdoctoral Associates with appointments of at least half-time status for a period of three months or more and who receive salary through the university payroll may participate in the medical, dental and vision plans; health savings account (HSA),flexible-spending accounts (FSA); and the basic life, supplemental life and long-term disability* insurance plans. Additionally, postdoctoral associates may elect to participate in the 403(b) retirement plan and are eligible for paid time off programs.
- Postdoctoral Fellows on Brandeis' payroll with appointments of at least half-time status for a period of three months or more and who receive salary through the university payroll may participate in the medical, dental and vision plans as well as the basic life, supplemental life and long term-disability* insurance plans. Postdoctoral fellows cannot participate in the 403(b) retirement plan, the HSA or tuition remission program.
- National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Fellows who receive a stipend are eligible to participate in the medical, dental and vision plans only, and cannot participate in the 403(b) retirement plan or other benefits.
- Postdoctoral Scholars with -courtesy appointments, appointments less than 3 months or less than half time and those not paid directly through the university payroll are not eligible for any benefits.
* Long-term disability coverage requires full-time status.
Employees Not Eligible for Benefits
Ineligible Staff, Faculty and Temporary Staff are still eligible to contribute to the 403(b) plan- without university match.
Ineligible Postdoc's cannot contribute to the 403(b) plan.
Ineligible employees may be able to enroll in health benefits through the Massachusetts Health Connector.
What happens to my benefits when eligibility ends?
Benefit eligibility may end for a variety of reasons. See the End of Eligibility pages for information on when each benefit ends and options for continuation of certain plans.
