“Smith was obviously a staunch advocate for Middlesex’s credibility, so when it came time to design the new campus, he sought to assert the strong presence of, and new hope for a future for Middlesex through its architecture. By building the medical school high upon a hill in the form of a castle, an inherently defensive form, Smith created a literal stronghold from which he could defend Middlesex from criticism. The castle proclaimed that Middlesex was different, proud, and there to stay.”
