Linda Bond

Reconnaissance

August 18 - October 27, 2015

Linda Bond, exhibition post card. Text says: “Linda Bond. Reconnaissance. Aug 18-Oct. 27, 2015 | Kniznick Gallery. Women’s Studies Research Center. Brandeis University.” Background image is a detail of a woven floor mat constructed from strips of newspapers. There are snippets of news articles and headlines containing large words such as “Intern,” Outrage” “testimony”, “exposing” “part of the New York Times logo; and images of Middle Eastern women with head scarves some covering their eyes or looking downward. Also sections of sports photos, landscapes, hands and undiscernable details of other photos.

For over two decades, Linda Bond’s artwork has addressed issues of social concern. Pausing to examine the details of violent events as they unfold, most recently in the Middle East and South Asia, Bond both humanizes these tragedies and combats the numbing effects of a media-saturated culture. In addition to working with newspaper content, Bond uses the printed pages themselves as a source of raw material to create wall installations, woven floor mats and text-based drawings.

War Rugs from Afghanistan

Tuesday, August 18 - Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Also on view at the WSRC Liberman-Miller Lecture Hall

Since the 1980's, Afghan rug weavers have been constructing textiles with adapted icons of war into traditional geometric designs. Commonly referred to as “war rugs,” these folk objects have transformed over 30+ years of production to capture both an evolving presence of unrest and a perpetuated market interest.
