Student Biographies


Sandra Casarez '21

Major: Health, Science, Society, and Policy and Biology
Minor: Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
Hometown: Santa Clarita, CA
Pronouns: She, Her, Hers

Sandra is currently a second year at Brandeis. She is from the greater Los Angeles area and has lived there her whole life. She is also the first in her family to attend college. She is interested in being pre-med at Brandeis with a major in HSSP and Biology with a minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality studies. With that, she wants to go to med school in hopes of serving as an obstetrician in developing countries. Around campus you can find Sandra participating in BLSO, the Peer Mentor program for SSSP, and her second year on the SLB. She is very excited about her second year at Brandeis and involvement around campus and in SSSP.


Billy Chau '19

Billy is from the Bronx, New York and is currently a senior majoring in Biology and completing a master’s in Biotechnology. He aspires to be a researcher and hopes to become fluent in Spanish. He wants to make his family and the people from the Bronx proud! In addition to being on the SLB, he is also a peer mentor for SSSP and a member of the boxing club on campus. This past summer he was a camp counselor in New York. This will be his second year on the SLB and he is looking forward to plan fun events.


Jorge Chavez '20

Major: Biology
Hometown: Mount Vernon, NY

Jorge is a junior majoring in biology and on the premed track. This is his first year on the SLB but his second as an SSSP peer mentor. On campus, he is a member of BEMCO, where he volunteers his time as an emergency medical technician. He is also part of the executive board of Relay for Life and Smile Train, two student-run organizations that raise funds and awareness for cancer and cleft lip respectively. On his free time, you can find Jorge volunteering as a teacher assistant at the local elementary schools in Waltham. You can also find him at the gym playing basketball or exercising in the weight room. Jorge hopes to one day attend medical school and as a physician serve those living in communities with limited access to quality healthcare. This year he is really looking forward to welcoming the incoming SSSP freshman.


Karekin Johnson '19

Karekin is a senior and Posse Scholar from Atlanta majoring in Economics and minoring in legal studies. After studying abroad for a year at the University of Oxford, he is excited to once again plan events for the SSSP community. Over the past two summers, he held an internship with Wells Fargo’s Government Institutional Banking division. In his role he worked as a financial analyst working with local governments, nonprofits, healthcare and higher education. After Graduation he plans to work full time with Wells Fargo to learn more about the innerworkings of Government. Later he will return to school for his JD and get into U.S. policy reform. Karekin is excited about all the great things the SSSP community will do this year. 


Jennifer Manzano '21

Jennifer Manzano is a second year Posse Scholar from Atlanta, Ga double majoring in Psychology and Health, Science, Society, and Policy. On campus, Jennifer has spent most of her time on the executive board of Brandeis Latinx, The Housing Advocacy Clinic in Waltham, and working at the Lurie Institute for Disability and Policy in The Heller School. This is her first year on the student leaderships board and she is excited about being part of engaging and expanding the amazing SSSP and Brandeis community.


Joao Rodrigues '21

Joao is a Massachusetts native and is currently in his second semester at Brandeis. He plans on majoring in HSSP with a minor in Legal studies. As a Mid-year student Joao looks forward to taking an active role in the SSSP program as this is this first year in SLB. Joao’s favorite sport is soccer and enjoys listening to rap music. After Brandeis Joao plans on continuing his education by going to law school to become a Healthcare Lawyer. Joao is hopeful for what SLB has in store for this year.

Agnele 17-18

Agnele Sewa '20

Agnele is a Junior Brandeis Atlanta Posse Scholar majoring in Biochemistry. As a freshman, she was invited to participate in the CDC HIV and TB Student Worksite Experience Program. She spent the summer of 2017 working as a research intern at the University of Buffalo to assist Dr. Laura Feltri at the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences - Hunter James Kelly Research Institute. This past summer she did a research internship at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University. She currently works as a research assistant at the Paradis Lab, serves as a teacher’s assistant for Music and Dance form Ghana, and a Community Advisor. She also the Biochemistry UDR and the BUGS tutor for Biology. She hopes to pursue a career in research in hopes of making treatments more accessible to all. She looks forward to the exciting year ahead! 


Irma Zamarripa '21

Irma is a sophomore at Brandeis University. She is passionate about education, social justice, and law specifically in education policy for minorities in this nation. Hence, she hopes to obtain a double major in Sociology and Education Studies with minors in Legal Studies and Social Justice/ Social Policy. She is part of the Student Leadership Board, and she hopes to contribute insightful ideas and inclusive projects for the SSSP community. She is most excited about planning I AM week as well as working for the Student Support Services Program as a peer mentor to three hardworking young ladies.
