Structural Bioinformatics
This course builds a foundation in the interrelationship between protein structure, sequence, and function. This is used as a basis for evaluating database search results and protein sequence alignments and phylogenies. The course also covers use of advanced molecular visualization and modeling tools and structure based drug discovery.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Recognize the structural elements of a protein.
Classify proteins and designate subfamilies.
Define and predict binding sites.
Build a protein homology model.
Determine when to apply methods that exploit the relationships between structure, sequence, and function in uncovering biological insight into novel proteins.
