The Education Program at Brandeis has two missions:
- Preparing teachers who are reflective practitioners and who excel in the classroom
- Studying the institution of education using scholarly tools from multiple disciplines
We are a small program in which dedicated faculty, outstanding school colleagues, and wonderful students work closely together.
For undergraduates, we offer two options:
- In Education Studies, students examine the impact of political, historical, cultural, psychological, economic, and social forces on education, a critical institution in our democracy, and they examine the role of education in shaping identities, life changes, and society. Students may elect a major or a minor in Education Studies.
- In Teacher Education, students prepare for teaching at the preschool, elementary, middle or high school level. Teacher Education is a minor, elected in conjunction with a compatible major. The elementary, middle and high school minors lead to the initial license to teach.
For graduate students:
- We offer the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). This four-semester, full-time program integrates challenging coursework with a year-long guided teaching internship in a public elementary or secondary school or a Jewish day school. The program leads to the initial license to teach.
- Graduate students in other fields may find various education courses to be of interest and suitable for inclusion in their program plans. Independent studies may also be arranged. See Faculty and Staff for capsules of faculty expertise. E-mail us about education options for Brandeis graduate students in complementary fields.
