Featured Student from 2013 Cohort: Peter Caccavale
Before coming to the MAT program, I attended the College of the Holy Cross as a Pre-Med/Classics major. I then moved on to receive my MA in Classics at Brandeis, with a focus on Latin and Greek as well as Ancient History. Being raised in a family of teachers, I have always wanted to teach, I just wasn't sure in what capacity. As a teaching assistant and writing tutor here at Brandeis I've really developed a love for working with my peers and helping them succeed. My hope is to bring that same passion to my future high school students in order to inspire them to succeed in the classroom. Having been a part of the Brandeis graduate community for a few years already, I know of the high reputation of the Education department and I'm looking forward to the new challenge of the MAT program.
Peter is currently a history student teacher at Belmont High School.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance
Financial support for graduate students and prospective teachers is available from a variety of sources. The following are sources of particular interest to Brandeis MAT students. This information is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of posting, but applicants are responsible for obtaining current and correct information from appropriate officials. The Brandeis Public Educator Scholarship
The Public Educator Scholarship provides $15,000* in tuition remission to an MAT student with outstanding potential to contribute to the improvement of public education through an active and creative life as a teacher in the public sector.

* The Scholarship Committee at its discretion may, and generally will, award Brandeis Public Educator scholarships in lesser amounts, in the interest of providing support to as many highly promising students as possible, and with the aim of assembling a student cohort of diverse backgrounds and talents.
Dean's Scholarship for an Outstanding Teacher in a High Needs Area
The Dean's Scholarship for an Outstanding Teacher in a High Needs Area provides up to $10,000 in tuition remission to an MAT student with outstanding potential for an strong commitment to teaching in an identified "high needs" area, generally defined as one or a combination of the following: high poverty school, mathematics, physics, chemistry, or biology.

The Brandeis Jewish Educator Scholarship
The Brandeis Jewish Educator Scholarship provides up to full tuition support to an MAT student with outstanding potential as a teacher of Tanakh and high promise of an active and creative life as a teacher in Jewish day schools.

Americorps or City Year alumni/staff
The application fee is waived for Americorps and City Year alumni/staff; Americorps and City Year candidates admitted into the MAT program are awarded a 25% tuition scholarship. No separate application is needed for the Americorps/City Year scholarship. Candidates should select "Americorps/Peace Corps" in the "affiliations" portion of the online application form. The Brandeis Alumni Scholarship for Teaching
The Alumni Scholarship provides tuition remission of 25 percent, in addition to any need-based aid for which the student may be eligible. It is awarded to any Brandeis graduate admitted into the MAT program, in honor of the university's historic commitment to social justice and the similar commitment demonstrated by the student in choosing teaching.
No application necessary to receive this scholarship.
Recipients of the Brandeis Alumni Scholarship for Teaching will make a brief report to the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Aid Based on Demonstrated Financial Need
Need-based tuition grants (generally around 20% of tuition for master's students) are available on a limited basis to qualifying students who are enrolled at least half-time. Students apply for need-based aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Brandeis code is 002133. We encourage applicants to fill out the FAFSA at the same time they apply to their graduate program.
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans are available to students with demonstrated financial need. Because the program is four semesters long, MAT students may apply for Stafford loans for two academic years, thus increasing the amount of the potential loan. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The Brandeis code is 002133.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Programs
MAT students who, upon graduation, go on to teach in federally designated low-income elementary schools may be eligible for loan forgiveness up to $5,000. For more information on loan cancellation and deferment options for teachers, visit the Federal Student Aid Web site.
MAT students may also be interested in the TEACH Grant program.
Please note that loan-forgiveness programs employ very strict criteria.
