Greener Dorms

Sustainable Living at Brandeis and Beyond

College is a unique time for students to form key, lifelong habits. Our project capitalizes on the unique experience of communal dorm living to instill environmental consciousness into the daily life of students throughout their time at Brandeis and beyond.

Shower Timers

We expect that students will begin to notice the length of showers by installing 5 minute shower timers in freshman and sophomore showers. Even if students continue to take showers longer than 5 minutes, if every student using these timers is motivated to reduce shower-time by 2 minutes, theuniversity could save about 6,000 gallons of water per day (source).

Cold-Water Detergent

Up to 90% of the energy used by typical washing machines goes to heating the water (source). By providing all laundry rooms in Massell, North, and East Quad with cold water detergent, we predict that students will use warm water wash less frequently, saving the university valuable energy and money.

Hall Events

During the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters, our team is partnering with the Department of Community Living to conduct several hall events in Freshman and Sophomore quads, highlighting these additions to sustainable dorm life and educating residents about other easy lifestyle changes that are good for sustainable living at Brandeis and beyond. These events mix a variety of games, demonstrations, displays, and facts to engage residents. Takeaway values include:
• Not running the sink while brushing teeth
• Unplugging electronics when not in use
• Understanding how to sort daily waste by recycling, composting, and landfill
• Conceptualizing long term harm of not modifying small, daily actions
