Pedro L. Fontes
Pedro Fontes is not only known for his sociable and charismatic personality, but also for his great achievements during his TYP year at Brandeis, and beyond. Pedro came to the TYP from Avon High School during the academic year 1994-1995. While in high school, he was the captain of his soccer team, as well as the vice president of his graduating class. A highly motivated individual, Pedro came to Brandeis and held a full time job, participated in the Mosaic diversity leadership pre-orientation program, as well as in cultural programs such as the Black Student Association and ¡Ahora! Pedro graduated from Brandeis with a double major in political science and African and Afro-American Studies, and a minor in the legal studies program. Currently, Pedro helps individuals with private wealth management as a financial consultant at Smith Barney, one of the world's leading financial institutions. Pedro is also an active member of the community and is involved in many community organizations, where he focuses on economic development in inner city areas.
Martine Gomes
Martine came to the TYP from Avon High School, where she was a four-year member of the National Honor Society, the captain of her track team, and organized the school’s first Black History Day. Born in Senegal of Cape Verdean descent, Martine was the first in her family to attend college. She attended TYP during the academic year 1996-1997 and graduated from Brandeis in 2001 with a double major in African and Afro-American studies and sociology, as well a double minor in women’s studies and theater arts. While on campus, Martine received a community service award from the Brandeis TRiO Programs and was a campus leader in many organizations. Since graduating from Brandeis, Martine has completed a program in Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston and has worked as a Legal Aide for the State House. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Cape Verdean Association in Brockton.
