Student Biographies

Jordin 16-17

Jordin Carter
Class of 2018
Major: Biology & IMM

Jordin is currently a junior at Brandeis majoring in Biology with an intended major in the IIM. She recently traveled to Haiti with the YourStory International (YSI) program to perform free research on the medical access and affordability in a small village in Léogâne. She also helped build a free clinic and provided free clinical services to the villagers. She currently enjoys performing on the Brandeis Platinum Step Team and competes in field events on the Brandeis Varsity Track Team.

Angel Cruz
Class of 2017
Major: Biology

Angel was born to two Mexican immigrants and is now the first of his family to attend college. He believes that he is now carrying out the dreams and hopes of his parents by studying Biology at Brandeis University. Angel knows that as a first generation student he has the important responsibility of setting a good example for the rest of family and for future generations of Hispanic and Latino students. He hopes to become a doctor so that he can give back to his community in Harlem, New York. He considers SSSP as one of his strongest support groups.  He believes that the SSSP network of support requires participation from everyone. He was inspired by his previous peer mentor, and he now gives back to SSSP. When he’s not organizing events with the Student Leadership Board or studying, Angel likes to practice playing the guitar. He advises first-generation students to stay open-minded and to try out new and exciting things while on campus!

Michelle SLB 16-17

Michelle Dennis
Class of 2018
Major: Biology

Michelle Dennis is an Atlanta native who arrived to Brandeis in the Fall of 2014 as a Brandeis Atlanta Posse Scholar. Michelle is now a junior with an intended Bachelors of Science in Biology. This year Michelle serves as a Community Advisor, a Biology Laboratory Teaching Assistant, and a member of the Student Leadership Board of SSSP. In her free time, it is likely to find her in the dance studio as she loves ballet and was the Artistic Director of the Brandeis Ballet Club. With hopes of becoming a pediatrician or neonatologist, Michelle plans to use the education she is receiving from her professors, other staff and faculty members, and students to achieve her goals. She has a genuine passion for working with people and is excited for her third year with the Student Leadership Board.

Ashley SLB 16-17

Ashley Ertilien
Class of 2017
Major: Education Studies

Ashley is an Education Studies Major and a Legal Studies minor. She is interested in the inner workings of the education system in America both inside and outside of the classroom--but has wanted to be a lawyer for as long as she can remember. This past summer, Ashley interned with the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School for the second summer in a row and hopes to bring what she’s learned there to her everyday life. As a member of Minds Matter and a member of Summer Search Boston, her mentors have been an instrumental part of her motivation. During the school year she is a member of several campus clubs including the Platinum Step Team. This is her senior year at Brandeis and her second and final year with the Student Leadership Board.

Karekin Johnson
Class of 2019
Major: Economics/ Minor: Legal Studies

All the way from College Park, GA, Karekin is currently a sophomore at Brandeis University majoring in Economics and minoring in Legal Studies. Karekin is driven and passionate about seeking out avenues for economic and educational equity. Karekin is a member of the mock trial team and a peer mentor for SSSP. He seeks to inspire by reaching back and uplifting others. Over the years Karekin has worked with numerous nonprofit organizations in the revitalization of certain disadvantaged communities. This past summer, he worked with Breakthrough Collaborative as a Middle School math and hip-hop history teacher in Orange County, California. Karekin believes that education is the key to uproot a community out of poverty and to bridge the achievement gap. He is ready for the year and for the amazing memories that SSSP will bring.

Cindy SLB 16-17

Cindy Ma
Class of 2018
Major: Bology & Computer Science

Cindy is currently a junior at Brandeis majoring in Biology with an intended major in Computer Science. Recently, she traveled to Honduras with Global Medical Brigades and volunteered with local and foreign health professionals to provide medical care to patients in rural communities. There, she also helped a community with in-home infrastructural development aiming to prevent common illnesses. This past summer, Cindy took EMT classes in hopes to being a certified EMT and continue with her passion in healthcare. On campus, she enjoys playing tennis, dancing at cultural events, and working with the Chemistry Department as a lab assistant. She is also part of organizing Brandeis’ Fall Fest Family Weekend as the Academic Programs Coordinator. She is very excited and looking forward to her first year on the Student Leadership Board.

Matt SLB 16-17

Matt Michaud
Class of 2018
Majors: History, Economics, Sociology

Matt is a junior majoring in History, Economics, and Sociology. He also studies Japanese language at Brandeis. His hometown is Oxford, Connecticut. On campus, Matt participates on the men’s ultimate Frisbee team, is the Secretary for the Brandeis Quidditch team, and serves as a UDR for the History department. He is also a community advisor in the castle. He is looking forward to his third year on the Student Leadership Board.

Catherine SLB 16-17

Catherine Novas
Class of 2017
Major: Education

Cathy is from Providence, Rhode Island. She is currently a senior majoring in Education with a concentration in Urban Education. Cathy is very passionate about teaching and providing equal opportunities to underrepresented students. When Cathy is not too busy saving the world, she enjoys going to church, taking photos of landscapes and eating authentic Dominican meals. Being part SSSP has taught her to venture out of her comfort zone and to be willing to try new things. Cathy’s fellow SSSP peers have inspired her to pursue her own experiences on the Student Leadership Board, to study abroad and beyond. She is extremely excited about the upcoming SSSP events, including the SSSP Retreat.

Katherine SLB 16-17

Katherine Vargas
Class of 2017
Major:Psychology, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies

Katherine is currently a senior at Brandeis majoring in Psychology and in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. She has recently returned from a semester abroad in Morocco where she studied Arabic and Moroccan culture classes. After that she traveled to Egypt and Israel. She currently works as a peer mentor within Student Support Services and as a study abroad ambassador. Katherine enjoys watching anime, listening to k-pop, and learning as much as possible about different cultures. She is also proud of her Latina heritage and Jewish faith.
