Artificial Intelligence Steering Council

Core Responsibilities

The Brandeis Artificial Intelligence Steering Council is the central advisory and information sharing council responsible for reviewing uses of AI in academics and administration, reviewing AI policies, use cases, and University AI priorities, delivering recommendations to IT, Administrative, and Academic-related Governing bodies, and regularly keeping the Provost and EVP as Executive Sponsors informed on AI-related topics at the University.

Policy & Standards Review & Advisory

  • Review university-wide principles and procedures for the ethical, legal, and responsible use of AI.
  • Review and advise on acceptable use policies for AI in instruction, research, and administration as they are developed and updated by other governing or decision-making bodies on campus.
  • Offer guidance on AI-related procurement, pilots, and funding proposals to IT Governance Committees.
  • Consult with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Library, ITS, academic and staff departments, and other stakeholders, to assess community needs, offer advice on potential opportunities, and assist in developing AI-related proposals for technology to the community through IT Governance processes.

Risk Management Advisory

  • Collaborate with General Counsel, ITS Security, and Brandeis Data Governance Program to mitigate risk and flag liability concerns in areas such as:
    • IP ownership with generative AI
    • Use of student and institutional data
    • Algorithmic bias and discriminatory outcomes

Funding, Sustainability, and Equity

  • Focus on resource pooling with existing personnel, committees, and centers (e.g., IT Governance, IRB, staff departments, and others) for co-sponsoring AI-related events; assessing potential cost savings as requests move through IT Governance.
  • Ensure that AI solutions enacted at the school offer sustainable solutions.
  • Review how AI use may affect different populations on campus and address potential equity implications.
