Brandeis University Advisory: Avoid Contact with Sick or Dead Wildlife
Recent reports from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health indicate that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been detected in various bird species across the state. While the risk to humans is low, it is essential to exercise caution.
Guidelines for the Brandeis Community
- Do not handle sick or dead animals: Refrain from touching or moving any wildlife that appears ill or deceased.
- Report immediately: If you encounter such animals on campus, contact Public Safety at 781-736-5000 for proper handling and removal.
- Protect comfort animals and emotional support pets: If you have a personal comfort animal, therapy pet, or emotional support animal, avoid areas where wildlife congregates and monitor for any signs of illness. Contact a veterinarian if your pet exhibits unusual symptoms. Cats, in particular, are susceptible to HPAI.
By following these guidelines, we can help protect our community and local wildlife. For more information, visit the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
