2019-2020 Teaching Innovation Grant Recipient

Teaching Literature in the Criminal Justice System
In fall 2019, I will teach the course Changing Lives through Literature to probationers under the auspices of the David ShermanWoburn District Court, in collaboration with Judge Marianne Hinkle. This will be a ten-week course that qualifies participants for reduced time on probation.
Versions of this course have been taught for many years in other districts, but this will be the first CLTL course in this district. The teaching innovation involves the very ethical premise of a literature course, as a way to build solidarity in a community within the criminal justice system and to animate the sense of personal agency of those rebuilding their lives after a conviction.
