Job Classification Coverage for Faculty and Staff
Below are the leave plans for various life events. Please note that all benefits have a seven-calendar day waiting period. During this time, you should use your sick time; if no sick time is available, you may use your personal or vacation time.

Benefits-Eligible Faculty Coverage
Benefits-Eligible Faculty include tenure track, non-tenure track, and benefits-eligible part-time faculty. Below are the leave plans for various life events. Please note the maximum benefit is 26 weeks in total in aggregate.

You will continue to receive 100% salary for up to six calendar months. There is no eligibility waiting period. Please note that faculty paid medical leave does not cover work-related injuries. Faculty with work-related injuries may receive workers’ compensation benefits.
- If you are the birth parent, you will receive 100% salary for 12 weeks. This is in addition to the benefit received under medical for birth recovery (typically 6-8 weeks).
- Paid Maternity Leave: Typically 6-8 weeks, depending on your benefits - 100% salary
- Paid Bonding Leave under MAPFML: 12 weeks following completion of Paid Short Term Disability - 100% salary
- If you are not the birth parent, you will still be able to receive 100% salary for 12 weeks. If you are married to another Brandeis benefits-eligible faculty member, you do not have to split the 12-week bonding time.
- 0-12 weeks: Paid Bonding Leave under MAPFML - 100% salary
- Note: Bonding leave can be taken any time up to 1 year following adoption, birth or foster.
- Weeks 1-12 (Private MAPFML plan) - MAPFML calculation, up to max $1,170.64.
For weeks 1-12, salary continuation will be provided by our Private MAPFML plan up to the MAPFML weekly maximum of $1,170.64.
The amount of benefits you are eligible to receive for our Private MAPFML plan is based on your own average weekly wage when you apply for leave. The maximum total amount that you can receive in MAPFML benefits is $1,170.64 per week.

Exempt Employees Coverage
Below are the leave plans for various life events. Please note that all benefits have a seven-calendar day (five business day) waiting period with exception of bonding leave. During this time, you may use your sick time; if no sick time is available, you may use your personal or vacation time. The maximum benefit is 26 weeks in total in aggregate.

Brandeis Short-Term Disability plan will provide the following percentage of your salary (after the one-week elimination period).
Please note that Brandeis’ Short-Term Disability plan does not cover work-related injuries. Employees with work-related injuries may receive workers’ compensation benefits and the amount of workers’ compensation benefits first, and the amount of workers’ compensation benefits will be deducted from the MAPFML plan benefit on a weekly basis:
- Week 1: Elimination period - you may use your sick leave during this time to receive 100% pay.
- Weeks 2-10: 100% salary continuation
- Weeks 11-20: 80% salary continuation
- Weeks 21-26: 60% salary continuation
- Weeks 27+ (Long-Term Disability): 60% to $10,000 monthly max
After 27 weeks, if approved, Long-Term Disability benefits will be provided to replace 60% of your salary, up to a maximum of $10,000 per month.

You may use your sick leave during the first week to receive 100% pay. From weeks 2-20, you will receive 80% pay up to a max of $1,170.64 through the private MAPFML plan benefit. Employees with work related injuries may receive workers’ compensation benefits first, and the amount of workers’ compensation benefits will be deducted from the MAPFML plan benefit on a weekly basis.
- Week 1 (PTO) - 100% salary
- Weeks 2-20 (private MAPFML plan) - 80% salary, up to max $1,170.64
