Brian Leiken became the rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom, a Reform congregation in New City, N.Y., on July 1. He had been with Temple Sholom in Norwalk, Conn., for seven years, the past five as assistant rabbi. Brian replaces David Fass, who had served as Temple Beth Sholom’s spiritual leader for 34 years. Brian’s wife, Shara Abraham, is an assistant district attorney in Westchester County. The couple has two children, Kaleb and Ari. Daniella Rubin Simon and her husband, Jonathan, have been married for 10 years. The Jerusalem Post profiled rock musician Shachar Gilad, who moved to Tel Aviv five years ago and has become popular in Poland. The son of two Israelis, he was born in New Mexico, moved between Israel and the United States, and then spent his junior high- and high-school years in Brookline, Mass. In summer 2011, he and his band played gigs in Germany and then Poland. A fan at a club in Warsaw was so impressed that she got the group — Shachar (guitar, vocals), Yonatan Ydov (bass) and Yoni Kory (drums) — to perform on a local Polish television show, a sort of “Good Morning Poland,” six months after the summer tour. The group sings in English and Hebrew. Professional baseball pitcher Nelson Figueroa had the chance to experience both sides of the Boston Red Sox-
New York Yankees rivalry during the 2012 season. In late July, the Red Sox signed the right-hander to a minor-league contract and assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket, R.I. Nelson had been 7-2 with a 3.96 ERA in 17 appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, a Yankees farm team, before being released., who moved to Tel Aviv five years ago and has become popular in Poland.
