Haile Menkerios of South Africa was named head of the United Nations Office to the African Union and special representative to the African Union by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Haile has extensive experience in African issues and with the U.N. He has served as special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan (2011-13), special representative and head of the U.N. mission in Sudan (2010-11) and assistant secretary-general for political affairs (2007-10). From 1991-2000, he represented the government of Eritrea in various capacities. Martha Kanter, undersecretary in the U.S. Department of Education, delivered the keynote speech at Hillsborough Community College’s commencement ceremony in Florida. Martha, who was appointed to her post by President Barack Obama in 2009, is in charge of overseeing higher-education goals, college policies and programs, federal student aid and five different White House initiatives. She often speaks about the importance of community colleges in the higher-education system.
