Oral Communication
Objectives
The oral communication requirement recognizes that students need to be prepared for a variety of ways to communicate effectively in various fields of study including oral presentations, interviews, active debate, critique, and performances.
Learning Goals
Oral Communication learning goals might include one or more of the following abilities:
- To present a coherent, articulate, well-organized speech in front of a group.
- To lead a class discussion with peers in an in-depth, organized, and thoughtful manner.
- To work successfully in a group project toward a common goal and to clearly communicate the work of this group in front of others.
- To debate and converse about intellectual ideas.
- To clearly explain research studies and results to specific audiences.
- To confidently present a paper at a conference using the professional expectations in the field.
- To successfully prepare and execute poster presentations.
- To network professionally with colleagues and peers at a conference.
- To hone an elevator pitch for use in professional situations, interviews, conferences and networking opportunities.
- To speak in a unique and individual way about your own work as an artist.
- To listen to others in a focused and active manner.
- To constructively critique the professional communication of others.
- To feel comfortable and confident in a public and/or professional speaking situation in presentation style and content.
- To prepare for and successfully complete a field-specific interview.
- To develop and hone an individualized style of presentation in a professional context that is unique to the individual.
- To inform, persuade, critique, and inspire through oral communication.
- To stand up and tell a great story.
- To orally advocate for and defend an issue of personal or professional importance.
- To successfully participate in group critiques of creative work.
How to Fulfill the Requirement
The oral communication requirement will be satisfied as defined in the requirements for each major.
