Clarifying Questions to Pose to Faculty
Uncertain of what an instructor’s expectations are in regards to using artificial intelligence for a particular course? It is important that you engage with your instructor(s) to ensure you have a good understanding of what is or is not permitted.
Consider posing some of the following questions to your instructor to help you get clarification.
- Is the use of artificial intelligence allowed in this course? If so, to what extent?
- For assignments requiring written work, is it acceptable to use artificial intelligence for research, brainstorming, drafting, or editing?
- May artificial intelligence be used for coding, technical, or math/math-based assignments?
- How should I cite or acknowledge artificial intelligence tools if I decide to use them for an assignment?
- What is the policy on using artificial intelligence during exams or quizzes?
- Is it permissible to use translation tools and, if so, what are the limitations on such use?
- Is it permissible to use grammar-correcting software which uses AI, such as Grammarly?
- Are there any particular artificial intelligence-related academic integrity rules that I should be aware of in this course?
- Will the course policy on artificial intelligence appear on the syllabus?
- Does the ability to use artificial intelligence shift for any particular assignments in this course?
- Would the use of artificial intelligence on a given assignment impact the grading in any way? If so, how?
