Gary Shteyngart, an award-winning author, whose brilliant ability to turn nostalgia and complexity of his Russian-Jewish-American identity into award winning satire visited Brandeis on November 5.
It seemed that this day would never come. Two weeks left… One week left. And, finally, here we are. Today we are meeting Gary Shteyngart.
His characteristics range from “literary phenom”, “important writer”, “one of the few” to “profane”,”sarcastic”, “satirical”….. The list goes on.So. Who is he, Gary Shteyngart? The truth is that he is a little bit of everything. Couple of hours in his company flew by in a second. As expected, Shteyngart read from Super Sad True Love Story and from Russian Debutante’s Handbook as well before answering questions from Dr. Kathy Lawrence and the audience at large. Listening to the author reading from his own books always brings new, some times even unexpected, perspective. This time wasn’t an exception. Many laughed and others smiled, recognizing themselves in Shteyngart’s characters. Over 150 people who came to this event enjoyed every second of it. Guests had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with the author and get their favorite books signed. Where from does all this admiration come? He writes about us and our families, about our friends, about our life, with a notorious Russian Jewish sense of humor and the ability to laugh at yourself.
This even was co-sponsored by the Center for German and European Studies, Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry, Department of English, Program in Creative Writing, Department of German, Russian, and Asian Languages and Literature, Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, Brandeis Russian Club.
