Special Topics in Project Management


The field of project and program management continually evolves. Project management professional groups such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) introduce new and revised standards each year; organizations adopt novel approaches and refine existing methodologies; updated industry data and case studies on the effectiveness of project management practices become available.
This Project Management Special Topics course facilitates the introduction of cutting-edge project management practices as they are introduced in the industry.

Outcomes will vary by course, but in general, student will be able to:

Apply emerging project and program practices specific to the course.

Place concepts introduced in the course into the context of one’s organization and the existing suite of standards and practices employed.

Special Topics Course Offering: Introduction to Clinical Trial Project Management
Note that this course may serve as an elective in both Management of Projects and Programs and Health and Medical Informatics.

This course is designed to help individuals understand the basics of how to manage a clinical trial, understand the environment around the clinical and scientific management including regulatory components and the differences between clinical project management and project management in other disciplines.

This course is introductory in nature and is designed for individuals who currently are in Life Sciences or Healthcare industries who are seeking to expand their practical knowledge of how clinical trials are designed and managed. It is appropriate for individuals in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, academic research or clinical fields.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

Assess critical success factors in clinical trial design.

Develop a framework project management plan for a clinical trial.

Analyze the ethical issues surrounding clinical trials.

Define the main role of a project manager in clinical trials.

Describe the overall flow and cycle of a clinical trial.

Discuss how enrolling sites are managed for performance and quality.

Analyze how data management impacts the overall quality of the data.

Assess how safety data impacts a clinical trial.

Describe the project management (and other) tools needed to run a clinical trial effectively.
