Federal Regulations

Both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have developed RCR training requirements for students and postdoctoral researchers funded by the NIH and NSF.

Responsible Conduct of Research

The responsible conduct of research (RCR) is a critical component of the education and training of all scientists engaged in research.

Online Training

Brandeis University requires all students, administrators, and postdoctoral researchers supported on a sponsored project, regardless of funding agency or funding type, to complete a customized RCR online training course within 60 days of beginning work on the project. This course is offered through the CITI program and must be completed every three years as long as you are working on a funded research project. Note that this training is in addition to any IACUC, IBC, or IRB training required by the university.

CITI training program

Directions for completing the CITI course can be found below.

In-person Training

In addition, all graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the physical sciences are required to attend the interactive RCR Seminar Course, CONT 300. Graduate students must participate in this course every four years. Registration for this seminar is through the Registrar's Office for graduate students; postdoctoral researchers must contact the instructor of the course to register

Instructions for those who have completed NO CITI training previously

For instructions on how to register for the CITI program, go to the CITI Program Support Center: How do I enroll in a CITI course for the first time?

Once you are registered, you will be asked to select your curriculum. You may ignore questions 1, 2, 4, and 5. Choose the most appropriate RCR course for your discipline in question 3 and answer "No" to question 6.

We encourage you to complete this training over a number of sessions. CITI will track the modules you have successfully completed and you may sign in as often as you like.

The IRB office will be notified when you complete the Brandeis University customized CITI training - there is no need to submit a printed copy of the completion report.

Instructions for those who have completed CITI training at a previous institution

If you have completed CITI training for another institution, you must still complete the Brandeis University customized CITI training. To do this, sign in using your username and password and affiliate yourself with Brandeis University (click the link Affiliate with Another Institution).
