New Course for Fall 2018: GECS 188: Human/Nature: European Perspectives on Climate Change

Cross-listed with ENVS and IGS. Tuesday and Thursday 2-3:20 pm. Instructor: Sabine von Mering. ENERGIEWENDE -  POWER SHIFT is what the Germans call the transition to renewable energy underway to address climate change. The term ‘Wende’ is borrowed from the dramatic shift represented by the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. This class aims to introduce you to the global problem of climate change and proposed solutions by highlighting German/European perspectives. You will leave this class with an understanding of the specific historical trajectory of German and European responses to environmental challenges in general and climate change in particular, and why these responses differ from those in the US. You will learn about the connection between ethics and aesthetics and recognize how forms of humanistic inquiry like documentary film, nature writing, and ecocriticism complement work in science or economics, providing critical reflection of the socio-political and economic processes affecting humanity today. You will discuss texts, films, and artwork. You will learn about activism, entrepreneurship, and the most up-to-date scholarship on solutions to the climate crisis.
