Lucas Malo has been passionately involved in community engagement for almost 25 years and is eager to support and facilitate opportunities locally and globally as an active member of the Brandeis and Waltham community. Lucas began his career at Brandeis in 2005 and continues to be inspired by the passion of our students and pride of our community partners. Lucas holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Michael's College and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine. Beyond Brandeis, he enjoys playing tennis, shopping, traveling and playing board games. Lucas invites students to visit his office on the second floor of the Shapiro Campus Center to explore service opportunities, seek assistance with training and reflections, develop community needs assessments, address risk management and make connections to the local community.

Katie joined Brandeis in 2017 as the Senior Department Coordinator of Community Service and Student Activities. Prior to Brandeis, she worked as the Campus Programs Assistant at Dexter Southfield, managing summer camp and after school programs. Katie earned her bachelor's degree from Saint Michael's College, with a major in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. Outside of Brandeis, Katie enjoys skiing in Vermont, traveling, New England sports, and spending time with friends.

In 2017, Lauren​ Shortall joined Brandeis as the Community Service Specialist. Lauren advises and supports students engaged in community service opportunities within the Brandeis and greater Waltham community, including the Waltham Group. She also enjoys working with a number of local community partners and partners with campus partners to help organize a variety of service initiatives, including the MLK Interfaith Day of Service, VolunteerFest, and the Gateway Scholars Service Day. Lauren has previous experience working with nonprofit internships, civic engagement, and student leadership development. She obtained a bachelor of arts in Economics and Psychology from Boston University and a master of science in College Student Affairs from Nova Southeastern University. Outside of work, Lauren can often be found rooting for New England sports teams, going on traveling adventures with her family and friends, volunteering in the community, and being entertained by her cat.

Will Brummett joined Brandeis's Department of Community Service team in the Fall of 2017. In Will's role, he supports students and organizations going on alternative break service trips, helps coordinate the Commitment to Service Award program, and oversees the Rich/Collins Community Leadership and Impact Fellowship. Will's greatest joy is working alongside students to find the intersections between their passions and ideas and the community's strengths and needs. Before Brandeis, Will served for four years as the Student Development Coordinator for the Bonner Center for Service-Learning at Carson-Newman University where he oversaw their Bonner Scholar program. Will graduated in 2013 from Elon University with a B.A. in Religious Studies and minors in Nonviolence Studies and Political Science. At Elon, Will was active in their Kernodle Center for Service learning as well as their Leadership Fellow program. In his free time, Will enjoys exploring the outdoors with his fiance Grace, watching West Wing marathons, and practicing his uncoordinated dancing.

Max Brodsky joined the Brandeis community in 2017 as the Massachusetts Campus Compact Americorps CCSNE VISTA member. Prior to Brandeis, Max taught middle school English and math in Spanish Harlem New York City for over two years and English language learners in Cheonan, South Korea for two years as well. Max holds a BA in English Literature and dual certificates in Philosophy of Religion and Interdisciplinary Religious Studies. He also earned a MA in Childhood Education (1-6) and Special Education from Touro College in New York City. Max enjoys hiking, running ultra-marathons, reading, and cooking.

Emily joined the Brandeis team in the Fall of 2017 focusing on building and stengthening partnerships between Brandeis and the Waltham Public Schools’ English Language Learners community. While completing her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology at Warren Wilson College, Emily participated in the Bonner Leaders program for three years. As a Bonner Leader, Emily led a wide array of community engagement projects, including an afterschool mentoring program, integrated educational and service workshops focused on food security and housing, and other educational access initiatives. Throughout the years, Emily also has spent extensive time tutoring ELL adults and youth, both in the US and abroad, as well as facilitating workshops on social justice and privilege. In her free time, Emily will be spotted practicing martial arts, reading dystopian fiction, and thinking about critical media theories.


Simon Millersimon miller

Simon Miller rejoined the Brandeis community in 2016 (he graduated from Brandeis in 2011) as a Graduate Assistant. Prior to his return to Brandeis, Simon served as an AmeriCorps City Year Corps Member and Team Leader in Philadelphia for two years. Following his City Year service, Simon served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia for three years as an English Language Improvement Advisor at a primary school and a Volunteer Leader in the capital, Addis Ababa. Simon holds a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. In his spare time, Simon enjoys being a foodie, watching NBA games, and playing piano.
