Meet the Staff
Lucas Malo has been passionately involved in community engagement for almost 25 years and is eager to support and facilitate opportunities locally and globally as an active member of the Brandeis and Waltham community. Lucas began his career at Brandeis in 2005 and continues to be inspired by the passion of our students and pride of our community partners. Lucas holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Michael's College and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine. Beyond Brandeis, he enjoys playing tennis, shopping, traveling and playing board games. Lucas invites students to visit his office on the second floor of the Shapiro Campus Center to explore service opportunities, seek assistance with training and reflections, develop community needs assessments, address risk management and make connections to the local community.
Senior Department Coordinator for Community Service & Student Activities
Katie joined Brandeis in 2017 as the Senior Department Coordinator of Community Service and Student Activities. Prior to Brandeis, she worked as the Campus Programs Assistant at Dexter Southfield, managing summer camp and after school programs. Katie earned her bachelor's degree from Saint Michael's College, with a major in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. Outside of Brandeis, Katie enjoys skiing in Vermont, traveling, New England sports, and spending time with friends.
Community Service Specialist
In 2017, Lauren Soares joined Brandeis as the Community Service Specialist. Lauren will advise and support students engaged in community service opportunities within the Brandeis and greater Waltham community, including the Waltham Group. She also looks forward to learning more about local community partners. Lauren has previous experience working with nonprofit internships, civic engagement, and student leadership development. She obtained a bachelor of arts in Economics and Psychology from Boston University and a master of science in College Student Affairs from Nova Southeastern University. Outside of work, Lauren can often be found rooting for New England sports teams, going on traveling adventures with her family and friends, volunteering in the community, and being entertained by her cat.
Max Brodsky joined the Brandeis community in 2017 as the Massachusetts Campus Compact Americorps VISTA member. Prior to Brandeis, Max taught middle school English and math in Spanish Harlem New York City for over two years and English language learners in Cheonan, South Korea for two years as well. Max holds a BA in English Literature and dual certificates in Philosophy of Religion and Interdisciplinary Religious Studies. He also earned a MA in Childhood Education (1-6) and Special Education from Touro College in New York City. Max enjoys hiking, running ultra-marathons, reading, and cooking.
Graduate Assistant for Alternative Spring Breaks and Programming
Commitment to Service Program Coordinator
Simon Miller rejoined the Brandeis community in 2016 (he graduated from Brandeis in 2011) as the Graduate Assistant for Alternative Spring Breaks and Programming. Prior to his return to Brandeis, Simon served as an AmeriCorps City Year Corps Member and Team Leader in Philadelphia for two years. Following his City Year service, Simon served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia for three years as an English Language Improvement Advisor at a primary school and a Volunteer Leader in the capital, Addis Ababa. Simon holds a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. In his spare time, Simon enjoys being a foodie, watching NBA games, and playing piano.

Commitment to Service Program Coordinator
Orláith Duggan joined the Brandeis community in 2016 as the Graduate Assistant for Waltham Group Assessment and Advocacy and to earn her Master’s in Sustainable International Development (SID) from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Orláith is originally from Seattle, Washington, where she earned her BA in International Studies from University of Washington. Before coming to Brandeis, she served as a Team Leader in AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in the Midwest. Through this experience, she found one of her passions was serving on disaster relief, leading her to volunteer with NECHAMA Jewish Response to Disaster. Orláith then decided to pursue a second year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA at Boston Cares. During her free time, Orláith enjoys dancing, painting, and exploring new places.
