Meet the Staff
Lucas Malo has been passionately involved in community engagement for almost 20 years and is eager to support and facilitate opportunities locally and globally as an active member of the Brandeis and Waltham community. Lucas began his career at Brandeis in 2005 and continues to be inspired by the passion of our students and pride of our community partners. Lucas holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Michael's College and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine. Beyond Brandeis, he enjoys playing tennis, shopping, traveling and playing board games. Lucas invites students to visit his office on the second floor of the Shapiro Campus Center to explore service opportunities, seek assistance with training and reflections, develop community needs assessments, address risk management and make connections to the local community.
Kelly Whiffen joined Brandeis in 2010 as the Department Coordinator of Student Activities and Community Service. Before coming to Brandeis, she worked in several coordinating roles, including Weekly Ad Coordinator and Schedule Coordinator at CVS Caremark and Communications Coordinator at Camp West Woods. She also worked with students as a gymnastics coach. Kelly holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Ithaca College, where she was actively involved in campus life as a gymnast for the school's Varsity team, copy editor for the school's newspaper and co-director of a Christian retreat. Outside of Brandeis, Kelly enjoys running, reading and volunteering with her church.

Talia comes to Brandeis after spending four idyllic years at Smith college, where she spent her time determining which coffee shop had the best latte. She was also fortunate to have the experiences of volunteering at Homework House, Tree House and the Kensington School refugee mentoring program. When not in school, she worked as a substitute teacher and a retail associate. Outside of Brandeis, she enjoys spending copious hours on Netflix, and attempting to cook edible meals.
Waltham Group Co-President
Kaiwen Chen is a senior from Montville, New Jersey. He is currently majoring in Biochemistry and Psychology and minoring in East Asian Studies. He has been working with Blood Drive since his freshman year before becoming a coordinator and now volunteers with a variety of Waltham Group programs. He also worked with a committee of three others to create a new Waltham Group program focusing on environment related community service. He enjoys performing for cultural events, so you'll probably find him at one or another! A lover of thrills, he hopes to go skydiving by the end of his senior year. As for his time in Waltham Group, he looks forward to working closely with all of the coordinators as well as helping Waltham Group grow even stronger and rise higher than ever before.
