Meet the Staff
Lucas Malo has been passionately involved in community engagement for almost 20 years and is eager to support and facilitate opportunities locally and globally as an active member of the Brandeis and Waltham community. Lucas began his career at Brandeis in 2005 and continues to be inspired by the passion of our students and pride of our community partners. Lucas holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Michael's College and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine. Beyond Brandeis, he enjoys playing tennis, shopping, traveling and playing board games. Lucas invites students to visit his office on the second floor of the Shapiro Campus Center to explore service opportunities, seek assistance with training and reflections, develop community needs assessments, address risk management and make connections to the local community.
Senior Department Coordinator
Kelly Whiffen joined Brandeis in 2010 as the Department Coordinator of Student Activities and Community Service. Before coming to Brandeis, she worked in several coordinating roles, including Weekly Ad Coordinator and Schedule Coordinator at CVS Caremark and Communications Coordinator at Camp West Woods. She also worked with students as a gymnastics coach. Kelly holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Ithaca College, where she was actively involved in campus life as a gymnast for the school's Varsity team, copy editor for the school's newspaper and co-director of a Christian retreat. Outside of Brandeis, Kelly enjoys running, reading and volunteering with her church.
Community Service Specialist
Brian joined the Brandeis community for the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Prior to coming to Brandeis, Brian served as the Graduate Assistant for Student Activities and Leadership at Babson College where he oversaw several leadership development programs. He also held an internship with the Orientation Office at James Madison University. Brian holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Holy Cross and a master's degree in higher education administration from Boston College. In his spare time, Brian enjoys cheering for the Red Sox, hiking, and playing golf.
Barbara joined Brandeis in 2011 as an undergraduate student and graduated with a bachelor’s degrees in English and Theater Arts. Prior to working with the Department of Community Service as a Massachusetts Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA, she worked with various organizations around the world such as the New England Aquarium, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Ireland’s Dublin Youth Theatre and the Nevada Shakespeare Company. She has a history of dedication to community service, having volunteered throughout her life and founded a children’s theater community service troupe. Outside of Brandeis Barbara enjoys reading, biking and Netflix bingeing.
Commitment to Service Program Coordinator
Emily Blecker joined the Brandeis community for the 2015-2016 school year as an MBA student at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and as the Commitment to Service Program Coordinator for the Brandeis Department of Community Service. Prior to coming to Brandeis, she worked at AcademyHealth and American Institutes for Research in Washington, DC. Emily holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. She has been involved in a number of community service projects over the years including serving as the Co-Chair of the AcademyHealth Serving the Community Committee and serving as a Peer Listener for the Reach-A-Peer-Helpline (RAPline) at Penn. In her free time, Emily enjoys riding her bike, bowling and trying out new restaurants.
Graduate Assistant for Alternative Spring Breaks and Programming
Simon Miller rejoined the Brandeis community in 2016 (he graduated from Brandeis in 2011) as the Graduate Assistant for Alternative Spring Breaks and Programming. Prior to his return to Brandeis, Simon served as an AmeriCorps City Year Corps Member and Team Leader in Philadelphia for two years. Following his City Year service, Simon served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia for three years as an English Language Improvement Advisor at a primary school and a Volunteer Leader in the capital, Addis Ababa. Simon holds a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. In his spare time, Simon enjoys being a foodie, watching NBA games, and playing piano.
Graduate Assistant for Waltham Group Assessment and Advocacy
Orláith Duggan joined the Brandeis community in 2016 as the Graduate Assistant for Waltham Group Assessment and Advocacy and to earn her Master’s in Sustainable International Development (SID) from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Orláith is originally from Seattle, Washington, where she earned her BA in International Studies from University of Washington. Before coming to Brandeis, she served as a Team Leader in AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in the Midwest. Through this experience, she found one of her passions was serving on disaster relief, leading her to volunteer with NECHAMA Jewish Response to Disaster. Orláith then decided to pursue a second year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA at Boston Cares. During her free time, Orláith enjoys dancing, painting, and exploring new places.
