About the Event
This presentation explores the cultural and economic importance of billfish in the New England and Mid-Atlantic Area (from North Carolina to Long Island, New York). By using conventional research methods such as trend and data analysis, reading books and scientific articles, as well as interviewing captains and fishing tournament directors, The Billfish Foundation gained valuable local knowledge and opinions about what makes billfish, more specifically white marlin and swordfish, a critical part of the economies of these regions.
This presentation also explores the potential for economic growth in these regions due to the presence of billfish in these waters and the growing positive reception of “catch and release” fishing. Another important aspect of this presentation is addressing misconceptions associated with billfish fishing and showcasing how The Billfish Foundation has played a crucial role in changing many of the negative aspects of the billfish fishing industry.
