7 Misconceptions About Online Learning
There seem to be a lot of misconceptions around online learning. Maybe because most Americans first heard about online learning through educational changes due to the Covid pandemic. With a virus running wild, many schools closed and swapped in-person instruction for online learning in an effort to continue education safely. But the online learning community has been around a lot longer than that.
Here are some misconceptions about online learning:
Myth 1: Online learning a new experimental thing.
Truth: In 2012, the Department of Education found that 32% of higher education students were enrolled in at least one online class. Concepts of remote learning have existed since 1700s, with independently completed courses using printed classwork materials. Online remote learning courses have been available since the 1970s, only expanding with the creation of the World Wide Web. Today, 53% of students in the US were enrolled in at least one online course, according to National Center for Education Statistics data.
Online programs at Brandeis have existed for decades, delivering top-tier asynchronous online degrees and certificates that provide students with the flexibility and accessibility to earn their degrees remotely.
Myth 2: Online learning is only available as synchronous night classes.
Truth: At Brandeis Online, our programs run asynchronously. Students have 24/7 access to course materials. There are no requirements that students participate on specified days or times, only that students meet the requirements defined in the syllabus for each course week.
Myth 3: Online learning isn’t very engaging.
Truth: Harnessing the latest advancements in educational technology, Brandeis Online delivers an immersive learning experience that is both dynamic and interactive. Truth: All faculty participate in extensive training in online teaching and learning methods, working with professional learning designers to guide their professional content in a way that creates engaging courses, best engages student communities, and has strong student outcomes.
Throughout the course, adjunct faculty are available like any in-person instructor, to email or talk to at Zoom office hours about assignment questions, course details, and the greater industry. At Brandeis Online, our faculty are active leaders in their fields who are passionate about their work and eager to help others thrive.
Myth 6: There is no interaction with students.

That includes student-to-student interaction through discussion boards, project presentations, and more.
