Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship

Application Instructions

To be considered by the selection committee for the Mortimer Hays–Brandeis Traveling Fellowship, candidates must be nominated by the institution from which they received their undergraduate degree. Each institution can nominate up to 3 students.

The deadline for applications will be set by each undergraduate institution. If you are nominated by your undergraduate institution, provide the materials below to your institutional representative, who will assemble your complete application and submit it to Brandeis on your behalf by March 16, 2026.

Please download and complete this application form (PDF) and submit it  along with the following items to your institutional representative:

  1. A project proposal

  2. An itemized budget

  3. A CV of not more than 2 pages

  4. A portfolio of creative work or writing sample

  5. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who know you and are in a position to discuss the merit and viability of your project and your ability to complete the project successfully. Download the letter of recommendation form (PDF).
  6. One official or unofficial copy of each undergraduate and, if relevant, graduate transcript.

All final applications must be submitted to Brandeis by the institutional representative on or before March 16, 2026.

For candidates submitting proposals in the visual arts or art conservation only:

  • Video or web-based work in the portfolio should be made accessible through a shared link within the document. Images may be linked or included directly. All links must be accessible by the administrative team of Meredith Monaghan, Executive Director of Academic Fellowships (monaghan@brandeis.edu); Margaret Lynch, Director of Undergrad-Faculty Research Partnerships (margaretlynch@brandeis.edu); Peter Kalb, Professor of Fine Arts and chair of the selection committee (pkalb@brandeis.edu). Additional committee members will be announced prior to the submission deadline, and will need to be granted access as well.

Fellowship awards are confirmed no later than mid-May of the year in which the fellowship is scheduled to begin.
