Dear Colleagues:
I write to solicit nominations for the new Nahum Glatzer Teaching Scholar Award. Consisting of a $10,000 award and a commemorative medal, the award will recognize a tenured Brandeis faculty member who “by personal influence, teaching, writing and scholarship promotes the high ideals of Prof. Nahum Glatzer (1903-1990), one of Brandeis’ legendary teaching scholars.”
Professor Glatzer’s extraordinary regard for clear and precise exposition and his unpretentious, unaffected manner made him a model scholar to students and colleagues alike. Beginning with his custom of inviting incoming first-year students to tea at his modest home, his door was always open to students. Teaching stood at the center of his work, even as he also produced voluminous world-class scholarship.
Professor Glatzer represented what has always made Brandeis distinctive – the unique bonds formed in and out of the classroom between students and world-class faculty mentors. Now, thanks to the generosity of one of Prof. Glatzer’s students, Brandeis is able to honor scholars who follow his model by displaying “lifelong dedication to intellectual rigor,” “all-too-rare humility” and “compassionate mentorship.”
To nominate a scholar for this award, please send a two-page letter explaining how your nominee reflects the ideals of Prof. Glatzer, as described above, as well as the nominee’s up-to-date CV. Nominations will be accepted until November 3, 2017 and should be sent electronically to provost@brandeis.edu.
