November 3, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Faith Smith to the inaugural Marta F. Kauffman ’78 Professorship in African and African American Studies. A leading scholar in Caribbean culture, the African Diaspora, sexuality, and literature, Professor Smith has been a key contributor to the advancement of African and African American Studies at Brandeis. The first endowed professorship in the AAAS department’s fifty-year history, this professorship reaffirms Brandeis’ commitment to social justice. Professor Smith is a pioneering scholar, esteemed teacher, and respected colleague with unparalleled leadership and service to the department and to the field at large. I look forward to a formal celebration of this appointment with an inaugural lecture.

Sincerely,
Carol A. Fierke
