Mission & Goals
The Center for Teaching and Learning helps Brandeis faculty foster deep and meaningful learning experiences that support their students’ intellectual growth and inspire them to improve the world.
The CTL aspires to:
- promote teaching as an intellectually stimulating and thoughtful practice, driven by inquiry, reflection, and collaboration;
- nurture learner-centered pedagogy based on current scholarship;
- inspire and support teaching innovation and experimentation;
- collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and administrators to foster student learning;
- engage faculty from across the University in conversations about teaching and learning;
- celebrate excellent teaching on campus; and
- help faculty and students enjoy their teaching and learning experiences.
Moreover, we recognize that teaching can be a difficult and lonely experience, and we welcome you to share your challenges with us. We hear you, we see you, and we are here to help. We are grateful for the important work you are doing.
How can we help?
If you are an instructor (including tenure- and non-tenure-track faculty members, graduate student TAs, etc.), we encourage you to reach out for help with any of the following challenges or opportunities:
- Defining and articulating your course goals
- Designing an assignment, exam, or other mode of assessment
- Planning your use of class time
- Honing your lecturing and/or discussion leading strategies
- Scaffolding students into challenging conversations
- Developing your and your students’ proficiency at giving and receiving feedback
- Checking your syllabus
- Training and supporting your TAs
- Developing course materials (lectures, slides, etc.)
- Providing workshops on a topic of your interest
- Identifying and requesting support for new projects and initiatives
