Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can generate new outputs, such as text, images, video, audio, and code, based on a user prompt.

As disruptive as large language models like ChatGPT may feel at the moment, it can help to consider them in the long line of technology platforms like Wikipedia, Google Translate, and the calculator. While each of these technologies was initially disruptive to how we approached teaching in our courses, eventually we figured out how to adapt our courses to emphasize student learning and to prepare our students to succeed in a world in which these technologies exist.

A set of evolving guidelines and principles designed to help instructors address the challenge of teaching in the age of Generative AI while still emphasizing student learning and allowing for meaningful student assessment.

Some high-level principles for thinking about how to incorporate Generative AI into courses, for instructors who are interested in cultivating students' AI literacy.

Many large language models make it easy for instructors to create their own, custom chatbots—that is, specialized versions of the generic chat interface whose knowledge, mission, and behavior (or "personality") are tightly constrained by a set of plain-language instructions designed by the instructor. Learn how to develop one for your own course.
