UJA-Federation of New York's Wall Street Division Presents Its Premiere Operation Exodus Philanthropic Event

December 15,  2010

Dmitry Levin, BGI Graduate Fellow in the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program attended The Wall Street Dinner,  Honoring Peter May and Michael Nierenberg.

The Wall Street Dinner, Honoring Peter W. May and Michael B. Nierenberg event focused on Former Soviet Union (FSU) Jewry.  The featured speaker was Natan Sharansky, a former Soviet refusenik and prisoner, Israeli politician, human rights activist, and author who I believe needs no further explanation. It was fascinating to hear him for the first time in-person discuss his journey, struggles, and the current state of the Jewish community.

Michael Nierenberg and Peter May - The award recipients of the evening, spoke in detail about their involvement with United Jewish Appeal  (UJA)  Federation of NY's project Operation Exodus that helped Soviet Jews emigrate to the US and Israel. Their efforts and those of the entire Jewish community in the US was a fresh reminder that Soviet Jews did not escape anti-Semitism on their own, but because of the coordinated effort and generosity of the world-wide Jewish community, particularly the American Jewish community.
