Richard Wendell '97

"My Brandeis degree in Philosophy is foundational to my professional success as a Business Executive in Data Science and Advanced Analytics.  There is a misconception that Philosophy and other Liberal Art degrees are impractical because they do not teach an employable skill.  I could not disagree more.  Many of the most successful people I have met have degrees in Philosophy.  Much of success in life is tied to one's ability to be persuasive.  I can imagine no better training in the art of persuasion.  The rigors at Brandeis also prepared me well for more technical studies in graduate school, where I combined an MBA with classes in Data Science.  I would also say that, for me, the Philosophy Department at Brandeis was a unique, immersive experience.  I often found myself having conversations with my Professors outside of the classroom, over coffee and dinner.  Professor Yourgrau, in particular, stimulated my thinking in ways that continues to endure to this day."
