Master's Degree Program

The master's degree program leads to a terminal Master of Arts degree in general psychology. The program provides students with an understanding of the scientific foundations of psychology (social, developmental and cognitive), as well as direct research experience (experimental design, data collection, data analysis and research writing). The department has a strong research and mentoring focus.

Students may enroll in the program on a full-time or part-time basis. Tuition is prorated for part-time students. Full-time students are expected to complete the degree in one year, but may choose with their advisor to complete the program in as early as nine months or up to two years. The program may take an additional one or two semesters to complete as an Extended Master's student (additional fees apply after the first academic year). Departmental funds are made available, in consultation with advisors, to support MA student research.

Recent graduates of our master's program have gone on to pursuits such as doctoral programs, research assistants, clinical research coordinators, education administrators, consultants/ advisors and project managers, as well as to careers in marketing, finance, government, tutoring and law.



Early applicants should apply by February 1 to be considered for the initial round of offers to be issued later that month. For students interested in being mentored by a particular faculty member, there will be the most availability for this early deadline. Review of applications will continue on a rolling basis until May 15Applications are accepted on a continuous basis with rolling admission. Students desiring to continue their studies toward the PhD must apply for admission to that program. Please note that application to and acceptance into the MA program and application to and acceptance into the PhD program are separate and independent of each other.

Joint Degree of Master of Arts in Psychology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

The Joint Degree of Master of Arts in Psychology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is available to students accepted into the psychology doctoral program only. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore the study of women and gender from a psychological perspective. The curriculum includes required and elective courses from the Psychology Department's regular graduate offerings and from a multidisciplinary list of courses included in the Women's Studies Program. Courses offered as part of the Graduate Consortium in Women's studies at Radcliffe College are also available to Brandeis students. All graduate students in the various joint master's programs (i.e. anthropology, history, etc.) meet together for the Graduate Colloquium Series, a year-long set of lectures, seminars, performances and exhibitions.

Boston Area Graduate Consortium

All full-time graduate students may enroll in one graduate course per term at Boston College, Boston University, or Tufts University. Information on courses for cross-registration is available on the Graduate School’s webpage for the Boston Area Graduate Consortium.

A student at Brandeis who wishes to enroll in a graduate course at one of the host institutions should obtain a registration permit from the Office of the University Registrar and should present this permit to the office of the registrar of the host institution. The student should consult with the instructor of the particular course and should expect to satisfy the prerequisites and requirements normally required for admission to the course, including adherence to the academic calendar of that course. The transfer of credit to Brandeis for work done elsewhere requires approval by the student’s program, the associate dean for graduate education and a grade of B-minus or better.
