"I have two small children, ages 3 and 7, a full-time job and a husband who travels frequently. I would not be able to complete the degree without Distance Learning."

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Distance Learning (DL) different from a traditional classroom setting?

DL provides flexibility and convenience for students to access courses via an Internet connection at any time. There are no physical classrooms for lectures, set meeting days or times or in-class exams.

There are weekly postings and other course assignments, with deadlines, but no in-person meetings or mandatory real-time chat sessions.

Who teaches Distance Learning courses?

The same experienced instructors who teach on campus teach our DL courses. Our instructors have been trained in DL teaching methods, and strive to create a collaborative learning environment in their online courses. [top]

What tools do students need to pursue a Distance Learning course?

Courses within our programs use LATTE, Brandeis' online learning environment based on the open-source learning management system, Moodle. We recommend using Mozilla Firefox when using LATTE. Review DL Technical Requirements for more details. [top]

How does a typical Distance Learning course work?

The DL course week starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesdays, for 10 weeks. Instructors and students communicate through LATTE, primarily via the discussion forums.

Instructors upload the course syllabus, online lecture notes/handouts, assignments, schedules, discussion questions, and contact and virtual office hours information.

Students post responses to discussion questions in the course's discussion forums throughout the week, following the instructor's due dates for weekly postings. They engage in discussions with their fellow students and with the instructor. Students upload completed assignments and receive graded work from the instructor, including feedback on participation.

DL courses allow students to "attend class" whenever and whereever they like throughout the week. Students typically do more reading, since online lecture materials and discussions are primarily text-based.  [top]

What are the skills of a successful Distance Learner?

A successful DL student is self-disciplined, motivated, comfortable with the technology, and has strong reading, writing and effective time management skills. Review the DL Self-Assessment for more details. [top]

Is Distance Learning right for all students?

People learn in different ways. DL is not the best course delivery method for everyone. Visit the Self-Guided DL Orientation and the DL Self-Assessment pages to explore how DL will work for you. [top]
