Is Law School in Your Future?
Key Questions
- What goals do you hope to accomplish immediately after law school?
- What goals do you hope to accomplish five to ten years after law school?
- Is there another path or graduate school program that will suffice for those goals?
- Is this the right time for you to apply to law school, or would you be better served by waiting?
The Hiatt Career Center is available to guide you through each step in deciding whether law school is a good choice for you:
- Take courses in the Legal Studies Program.
- Don’t worry which major you choose! Law schools accept students from all majors.
- Read literature available in the Hiatt Career Center or on this Web site regarding careers in law.
- Participate in the Hiatt Career Center Shadowing Program.
- After participating in the Shadowing Program, speak with lawyers—why not start with Brandeis alumni currently practicing law! This is conducting an informational interview. Speak with a counselor about how to obtain alumni contacts or go to Hiatt NACELink.
- Work at a law-related internship.
- Consider taking time off after graduation or doing paralegal work.

Skills law schools look for that you can develop inside and outside of the classroom include:
- Reading for detail and understanding.
- Writing in a concise and persuasive manner.
- Researching thoroughly and creatively.
- Formulating and articulating theories and arguments verbally and in writing.
- Conducting logical reasoning.
