Jewishness in Israel
with professor David Ellenson
Tuesdays – January 17, 24 and February 7, 2017
12:00 - 1:00 EST

“Jewishness in Israel” will explore how Israel’s founders’ disparate views of the “Jewishness” of the country continue to impact the state’s religion, identity, politics and culture.

David Ellenson, an internationally renowned scholar of modern Judaism, will teach the course. Ellenson has served as director of the Schusterman Center since June 2015. He is chancellor emeritus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the oldest Jewish seminary in the United States, where he served as president from 2001 to 2013.

The online seminar will consist of three, one-hour live sessions from 12-1 p.m. EST on Tuesdays Jan. 17, 24 and Feb. 7, 2017, along with online discussion forums and collaborative activities that participants can complete at their convenience. Each week, participants will further explore the course topics by writing responses to prompts and reacting to one another’s responses in an interactive forum. Readings and original source materials will be provided.
