Snapshots of Emerging Practice

Snapshots of Emerging Practice is a central event in the DeLeT curriculum. This four part series gives the cohort an opportunity to publicly reflect on their learning. Reinforcing the belief that teaching should not be a private affair that happens behind the closed doors of a classroom, the interns are invited to share and discuss their learning at four separate points throughout the year. Students are given video recordings of themselves from all four events so that they can see the development of their learning as they transition from student to teacher.

The first Snapshots meeting falls at the end of the first semester. Interns are invited to share and discuss their learning from the first summer of DeLeT. Faculty and fellow interns will comment, question, and offer support to the students.

For the second Snapshot event, interns are asked to speak about one important learning and one big question they have from the fall semester. Students can comment on their continuing coursework or reflect on their first semester of student teaching. Faculty, mentors, and fellow interns will comment, question, and offer support to the students.

The third installment of Snapshots of Emerging Practice takes place at the close of the spring semester and is an opportunity for the students to share some aspect of their teaching and their learning about teaching.  The event features the teaching units that the interns have developed and implemented for their lead teaching. Further, interns demonstrate how their learning meets the DeLeT Teaching Standards. Faculty, Mentors, Field Instructors, and fellow interns will comment, question, and offer support to the students.

The fourth and final Snapshots event coincides with graduation at the end of the second summer. The DeLeT cohort along with students in the secondary and public elementary concentrations present their classroom research projects and celebrate their graduation with an assembly of  families, friends, mentors, colleagues, and faculty.
