Academic Integrity and Violation Process
Faculty at Brandeis International Business School are expected to uphold the guidelines for academic integrity as set forth by the university. Please see "Academic Integrity Guidelines" for more information.
The business school has an established process to manage suspected academic integrity violations for graduate students. If you suspect an integrity violation, please see "Academic Integrity Violation Process" for more information.
Course Information
General Course Information
Graduate courses are designated by the prefixes “BUS,” “ECON,” and “FIN.”
Graduate students are also permitted to take selected upper-level undergraduate Economics courses (listed on the course schedule for the current semester).
Graduate courses run either for an entire semester for 4 credits (these courses end with “a”) or the first or second half of a semester for 2 credits (these courses end with “f”).
Half-semester courses are called “modules” and meet for a total of seven class periods lasting three hours each or 13 class periods lasting 90 minutes each.
Undergraduates in Graduate Courses
Undergraduates are permitted and encouraged to enroll in graduate courses if there is room.
Undergraduate students who are enrolled in the BA/MA may take any IBS course, including modules. Undergraduates not enrolled in the BA/MA program may also take IBS courses if space is available and if the student has the necessary background. (Determination of student qualifications is at the instructor’s discretion.)
If you have any questions about whether or not it is appropriate to have undergraduates in your class, or the number of appropriate undergraduates, please Karen Muise (kmuise@brandeis.edu) before signing their course addition forms.
Add/Drop Procedures
Consent codes or a signature are needed to enroll in classes controlled by the advisor/instructor permission or a numeric limit, as well as to allow students to drop a class in accordance to the drop policy. Students contact their Program Advisor regarding consent codes for adding or dropping a course. The advisor will redirect the student to the instructor if needed or based on the instructor’s preference.
If you have reservations about allowing any students into your course (for example, if you feel the class is too large to allow anyone else in), please discuss your concerns with Karen Muise (kmuise@brandeis.edu).
If a student wishes to add or drop a course after the open enrollment period ends, (s)he must get your signature on the Add/Drop Form. The student must then get a consent code from their Program Advisor. Instructors are asked not to give out drop codes directly to students.
Undergraduates should be referred to Karen Muise (kmuise@brandeis.edu) for Undergraduate Business and Leslie Yancich (lesliey@brandeis.edu) for Undergraduate Economics.
Please note that there are deadlines by which a student can drop a class. If you are unsure of the deadline, please refer to the Academic Calendar or check with one of the Program Advisors before advising a student to drop a class.
Grading Policy
IBS graduate students are not graded on the same scale as Brandeis undergraduates. Since some undergraduates may take your class, make sure to refer to the Undergraduate Course Information section to have a basic understanding of the grading rules for those students. Note that some BA/MA students may take your class in their undergraduate senior year; graduate grading policy still applies for them to count your class toward their master’s degree.
Graduate students are graded on a scale from A+ to E. IBS students are permitted up to 2 semester equivalent grades (8 credits) of C+ as part of a masters student’s grade record as long as the overall GPA in the best 16 (semester equivalent) courses is at least B–.
This policy will not apply to PhD students who will continue to be required to achieve B– or better to receive course credit.
An “E” is a Failing grade, “EA” is Excused Absence, and “EI” is Excused Incomplete. “NC” represents “no credit” and is considered an unsatisfactory grade in the Graduate School.
The lowest grade that will earn credit at IBS is a B–. The exception to this is that each student is permitted a total of two courses with C+ (total of 8 credits) over the course of the program of study. Any C+ grade or lower beyond this exception will not earn credit.
Learn more about the Brandeis International Business School Grading Breakdown for further explanation of grades, including EI and EA.
Exams
Faculty at Brandeis International Business School are expected to follow specific procedures during exams to help prevent Academic Integrity issues. Please see "Requirements and Proctoring During Exams" for more information.
Proctors
All exams must have a proctor. TAs are generally used to proctor midterm and final exams. If you do not have a TA or if your TA is not available for your midterm exam, please contact Lauren Hasselriis-Ghom or Leslie Yancich well in advance of the exam. If you require a proctor for your final exam, contact the Registrar’s Office early in the semester and they will do their best to provide one for you. Please see "Suggestions for Proctoring Exams" for a list of guidelines that you can provide to your TA to help maintain academic integrity during exams.
Accomodations
If you have a student who requires accommodations for an exam, please make these arrangements well in advance to make sure the student gets what they need. This will require you to inform students of their responsibility to report their need for accommodations early in the semester. For information and help with graduate student accommodations, please reach out to Kate Goldfield (kgoldfiel@brandeis.edu) or Jaspreet Mahal, Program Administrator, Student Accessibility Support (jaspreet26@brandeis.edu).
***Administrators do not proctor exams, this includes make-up exams. Additionally, administrative offices are not used for exams. Students need a separate, quiet space that will allow them to allow them to take their exam in the best environment possible. Administrative staff are happy to help organize a room for you with the registrar. TAs or proctors should be arranged if you cannot issue the exam yourself.***
