Political Identification

The latest data release from the American Jewish Population Project includes new data on the political identification and political views of Jewish adults.  

Key Findings

  • Nationally, 54% of Jewish adults identify as Democrat
  • The largest proportion of Democrats is in the District of Columbia (68%).
    • More than 60% of Jewish adults in West Virginia (62%), Kentucky & Pennsylvania (61%) identify as Democrat.
    • 57% of Jewish adults in the state of New York identify as Democrat.
    • The smallest proportion of Democrats are among the small numbers of Jewish adults in places like Utah (34%) and Idaho (37%), still twice as likely to identify as Democrat than other adults in these states (17% & 19%, respectively).
  • Across counties, Philadelphia county in Pennsylvania has the greatest proportion of Jewish adults who identify as Democrat (69%), followed by San Francisco (68%), and Manhattan (68%)
  • More than 60% of Jewish adults in the following areas identify as Democrats
    • Washington DC & Northwest Suburbs (65%)
    • Bronx & Staten Island (65%)
    • Pittsburgh (Allegheny county) (64%) and Pittsburgh suburbs (61%)
    • Santa Cruz/San Jose Areas (63%)
    • Queens (61%)
    • Lehigh Valley area in Pennsylvania (61%)
    • Prince George & Maryland DC suburbs (61%)
    • Portland, Oregon (61%)
    • Louisville Area (61%)

Other areas like Baltimore and Los Angeles are approximately 59% Democrat.
