If you, a friend or a student is at imminent risk, call Public Safety at 781-736-3333 (on campus) or 911 (off campus). Public Safety will respond immediately if you are on campus and the police will respond immediately if you are off campus.

The Brandeis Counseling Center, in conjunction with Newton-Wellesley Hospital, provides 24-hour emergency coverage, including phone consultation, immediate psychiatric evaluation, overnight observation, and in-patient hospitalization.

The Counseling Center staff and the Newton-Wellesley emergency services and psychiatric department are extremely sensitive to your confidentiality and responsive to your crisis. Please be reassured that an emergency team is always available.

In some rare instances a student's problems need immediate emergency attention. Generally, psychological emergencies fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • A suicide gesture, stated intention or attempt
  • Behavior posing a threat to the individual themselves
  • Behavior posing a threat to others
  • Demonstrated inability to adequately care for oneself
