Substituting a Requirement

If you have taken a course that is not a LING course or a course cross-listed in Linguistics and you would like to request that the course satisfy a requirement of your Linguistics major or minor, you should submit the online petition to request a substitution for a major/minor requirement to have the course applied toward your Linguistics major or minor in Workday.  Such courses might include:

  • a language course at level 30 or below that is eligible to be applied toward the Linguistics major’s empirical breadth requirement,
  • a course taken somewhere other than Brandeis, including during study abroad, that has been approved by a Linguistics advisor to satisfy a requirement for the Linguistics major or minor, and
  • a Brandeis course that relates to linguistics and that is not already cross-listed in Linguistics.

Once you submit the form, it will be sent to us and a Linguistics advisor will review it.  The Registrar’s office typically adds approved courses to Workday records within a day or two after a petition is approved.

Language Courses

If you are submitting the petition for a language course to be applied toward the Linguistics major, you should provide the information requested by the form, subject to the following notes:

  • In the box provided to specify the Linguistics requirement that the course will fulfill, please put “Linguistics Language/Empirical Breadth course”.
  • In the box provided to make your case for the substitution, please indicate:
    1. which course you used to satisfy the World Languages and Culture requirement (as indicated in the Brandeis Core Requirements section of your Academic Progress page on Workday), or
    2. if you have received a waiver for the World Languages and Culture requirement, what the basis of your waiver is (e.g., having taken a placement test or being a native speaker of a specific language) and which language the waiver relates to.

Other Courses

If you are submitting the petition for other courses, including courses taken outside of Brandeis and Brandeis courses that are not cross-listed in Linguistics, you should provide the information requested by the form, subject to the following notes:

  • In the box provided to specify the Linguistics requirement that the course will fulfill:
    • If you would like the course to count as a language course toward the Linguistics major’s empirical breadth requirement, please put “Linguistics Language/Empirical Breadth course”.
  • If you would like the course to count as an elective course toward the Linguistics major or minor, please put “Linguistics elective course”.
