Language Courses
Courses that can be applied toward the major
The Linguistics major’s empirical breadth requirement is intended to expose you to data in one or more languages other than English through linguistics and/or language study coursework, as laid out in the relevant set of requirements based on the semester and year in which you entered Brandeis.
Courses in which a language other than English is taught (“language courses”) can be applied toward the empirical breadth requirement so long as either:
- the language course is at level 40 or higher, in any language, or
- the language course is at level 30 or below, so long as it is not in the language that you used to satisfy the Brandeis World Languages and Cultures requirement.
You will need to first satisfy the Brandeis World Languages and Cultures requirement before you can apply a language course at level 30 or below toward the Linguistics major’s empirical breadth requirement, so that we can then verify that the language course is not in the language used to satisfy the World Languages and Cultures Requirement.
For example, if you took HISP 30 to satisfy the World Languages and Cultures requirement, you:
- could not use HISP 30 or any lower course in Spanish toward the Linguistics major
- could use any Spanish language course higher than HISP 30 toward the Linguistics major
- could use any level course in any language other than Spanish toward the Linguistics major.
As another example, if a student took HISP 105 to satisfy the World Languages and Cultures requirement, they could apply that course both toward the World Languages and Cultures requirement and the Linguistics major's empirical breadth requirement, since the course is above level 30.
