Doing Better at Brandeis (DB@B) Workshop Series - Spring 2022
Understanding & Addressing Violence, Discrimination, and Implicit Bias in our Community
Working with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), Student Accessibility Support (SAS), the Gender & Sexuality Center (GSC), the Ombuds Office, and the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO), we are offering the Doing Better at Brandeis workshop series for all faculty and staff.
The series began in the 2020-2021 academic year with the OEO training titled Discrimination, Harassment, Sexual Violence & Accessibility at Brandeis University. In that session, participants learned how Brandeis defines these terms in its policies, what type of support resources are available to help someone who may have experienced this conduct and where community members can report these types of concerns. While most staff and faculty have already participated in this course, OEO will provide additional workshops as needed to capture those who missed that training and for new incoming faculty and staff.
Upcoming Workshops
This Spring the workshop series will continue with four additional workshops that will be offered throughout the semester, and are meant to build off the conversations started in the OEO training. The hope is for all faculty and staff to attend one of these sessions this spring. The Doing Better at Brandeis workshop series will continue for the 2022-2023 academic year with additional offerings.
The current workshops include:
-
Creating a Gender Inclusive Learning Environment for Trans and Non-Binary Students (for Faculty & Staff - 90 minutes) - GSC:
In this interactive workshop, participants will learn good practice recommendations for creating more inclusive and equitable learning experiences for trans and gender-nonconforming students. Participants will first learn practical, theoretical, and historical information on the proper use of gender identity terms including personal pronouns. Participants will then learn why pronouns matter, how to ask and use pronouns, and what to do after making a mistake. This in-depth workshop combines presentation instruction and small group processing. -
Inclusive Pedagogy for Educational Equity: Small Steps, Big Impacts (for Faculty - 90 minutes) - SAS:
This workshop is designed to support faculty in implementing the full range of academic accommodations granted at Brandeis and utilizing Universal Design for Learning in their course design and instruction. UDL practices and accommodations reduce barriers to educational access for students with disabilities and other traditionally underserved students, thereby increasing equity in learning. -
Accessibility as Equity in Student Services and Campus Operations (for Staff- 60 minutes) - SAS:
This workshop will support staff in understanding disability as a form of diversity, and in implementing fundamental accessibility practices in their communications, interactions with students and colleagues, and event planning. -
Engaging with Difficult Conversation & Challenging Behaviors (for Faculty & Staff - 90 minutes) Ombuds:
This is an interactive, experiential workshop helping individuals gain approaches to difficult conversations that staff, faculty, students, may experience, at Brandeis and beyond. The goal is to learn skills to build a community of support, recognizing that differences exist and an understanding that we all bring our best and worst selves to life on a daily basis. By learning more effective communication skills, you will be able to create a healthier community and make use of these positive life skills.
The overarching goals of these workshops are to support inclusion and equity, and prevent discrimination, harassment, and other forms of community violence. Together we hope to work toward an environment where our employees better understand each other and can manage differences and conflicts in a more productive and inclusive manner.
