JOUR 113A — Long-form Journalism: Storytelling for Magazines and Podcasts

[ ss ]
What makes for a great story? This course will examine the hallmarks of successful narrative nonfiction, both in print and audio. Students will learn techniques to capture – and hold – the attention of readers or listeners throughout full-length works, including idea generation, reporting, character development, and story structure. In this course, students will act collaboratively, working as reporters, researchers, producers, writers, editors, and fact-checkers to hone their skills in journalism. They will learn the differences between print and audio storytelling, studying both award-winning magazine stories that have withstood the test of time and reporting-based podcasts that have injected new energy and financial success into the journalism world. Usually offered every year.
