- While International students may participate in internships, visa regulations affect how and when these internships take place.
- Visa regulations require additional steps, which may take considerable time, so planning your internship search is of the utmost importance.
-
As an international student, you will need to have work authorization from the immigration service before beginning an internship. Because of visa requirements, you may NOT begin any internship until you obtain the proper authorization.
-
F-1 student visa regulations require that the internship be in a student's major field of study, so you may also need to declare your major prior to gaining authorization for your internship.
-
Both paid and non-paid internships require immigration work authorization (curricular or optional practical training).
-
You must be enrolled in an internship course while participating in the internship due to F-1 visa regulations. Therefore, you are unable to complete an internship in the summer and receive credit for it in the fall or spring semesters. The internship experience and the credit (through a 92 or an 89 Internship class) must be happening concurrently.
