Program Overview
Experience journalism firsthand by covering the campaign for governor and legislative deliberations on the state budget, as well as other pressing policy matters. Government reporting assignments will take students into the corridors of power on Beacon Hill to explore how policy-makers shape the public agenda, and into the community to learn how those decisions affect the citizens of the Commonwealth.
Campaign assignments will take students to the state Democratic convention and inside public records to monitor financial donors to the campaigns.Work independently and cooperatively to report, write and edit magazine-length articles that expand on and illuminate daily political and campaign coverage.
In addition to developing a deeper understanding of the journalistic challenges of covering complicated policy issues and campaign strategies, students will acquire critical skills in research, interviewing and writing on deadline. Students will develop narrative, storytelling techniques to engage the reader in long-form journalism.
Earning credit during the summer session will also free students to apply in the fall or spring for existing journalism internships in the Greater Boston area from which students are now precluded because of their full academic schedules.
