Environmental and infrastructural transformations in Turkey’s expansive swamps and marshes have unfolded against the backdrop of nationalist remakings of land and water, grassroots mobilizations, and the international rise of wetland conservation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with farmers, scientists, and bureaucrats in two Turkish agrarian deltas and archival research, Caterina Scaramelli explored in this talk how relationships between water, sediment, infrastructure, plants, and animals matter in contemporary Turkey and what these relationships reveal about the intersection of moral and ecological concerns in the current moment.

Her talk was held in conversation with Neil Swidey, a professor of the practice and the director of the Brandeis Journalism Program.

Frumhoff was selected by Brandeis as the 2022 Richman Distinguished Fellow in Public Life and will be giving his lecture “From Science to Action on Climate Change” in the Rapaporte Treasure Hall, Goldfarb Library.
Peter C. Frumhoff served through 2021 as the longtime chief climate scientist and director of science and policy at the Union of Concerned Scientists. At UCS, he led strategies and initiatives to bring robust scientific expertise to bear on informing public understanding and motivating public policies; guided science, equity and innovation post-doctoral fellowships and served as senior liaison with the scientific community, policymakers and the media.
Dr. Frumhoff was in residence at Brandeis from March 29-31, 2022.

The war in Ukraine has sharpened our awareness of the need to transition away from fossil fuels and towards a sustainable energy future. That transition will require international cooperation and local action. This presentation and conversation offered three perspectives on the benefits and challenges of the Climate Smart Municipalities exchange between US and German cities on renewable energy and sustainable development.

Dr. Rosalyn LaPier is an award-winning Indigenous writer, ethnobotanist and environmental activist with a BA in physics and PhD in environmental history. Dr. LaPier spoke in Professor Kristen Lucken's Sociology of Religion course on Native American spirituality and the environment.

Undergraduates presented and shared their innovative research and creative projects with Brandeis students, faculty, staff, friends, and supporters during the second annual Undergraduate Research Symposium hosted by the URCC (Undergraduate Research and Creative Collaborations).
Students from all class years and all Divisions (Creative Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences) participated and represented the wide-ranging scope of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and creative inquiry at Brandeis.
